Recycling California Redemption Value (CRV) containers is a simple way to earn cash back while keeping recyclable materials out of landfills. At the Clovis Recycling Center, we help you understand which containers qualify, how redemption works, and what to expect when you arrive.
What is CRV?
CRV stands for California Redemption Value — a refundable deposit paid on eligible beverage containers when you buy them. When you return eligible containers to a certified recycling center, you get that deposit back, either by count or by weight.
How much? 5¢ per container under 24 oz and 10¢ per container 24 oz or larger. Wine and spirits in bag-in-box, pouches or cartons carry 25¢. Milk, infant formula and medical food carry no CRV.
What qualifies
- Aluminum, glass, plastic and bimetal beverage containers carrying a CRV marking
- Beer and malt beverages, wine coolers, sodas, water, juice, coffee and tea drinks
- Containers labeled “California Redemption Value,” “CA Redemption Value,” “CA Cash Refund,” or “CA CRV”
By count vs. by weight
- Small loads can be paid by count — up to 50 containers of each material type (aluminum, glass, plastic)
- Larger loads are paid by weight at California's state-set rates
Prep your load
- Containers should be whole and free of dirt, excess liquid and contaminants
- Sort aluminum, glass and plastic separately
- Remove any non-CRV items — mixed loads can be rejected or paid at scrap value only
Your rights as a consumer
If you're denied your legal right to CRV redemption, you can file a complaint with CalRecycle at 1-800-RECYCLE. California law protects your access to recycling refunds.
Rates and rules are set by CalRecycle and can change. Visit calrecycle.ca.gov for the latest, or call us before you come in.
